Samarkand is one of the great cities of the ancient world – even the name “Samarkand” evokes a sense of enchantment and wonder. During an excursion along the ancient Silk Road route through Uzbekistan, the Registan of Samarkand was among the most resplendent architectural masterpieces that I encountered. Departing from Lhasa, we drove along the Yarlung Tsangpo, Tibet’s longest river, arriving at Samye a couple hours later. The Samye Monastery was the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet.
